Shopping online is the first choice for some people and the last choice for many others. The biggest reason people cite for not shopping online is their security. It is definitely understandable with all the identity thefts that happen each year. This real and valid threat should not deter someone from shopping online but it should make them a more cautious shopper.
Here are some tips to shopping online:
1. Look for websites with the verified sign.
Reason: The verified sign means that there is extra security being provided by the web page. It means that they take your security concerns seriously.
2. Look for websites that allow you to pay through a third party, such as PayPal.
Reason: The Number One Reason is that the store does not have access to any of your private bank or credit card information. Be sure to pick a reputable third party because they only got their reputation by keeping their customers information secure. The Number Two Reason is that they can often return your money if the store doesn't send you the item you purchased.
3. Once you find a website with the product you desire, take a moment to browse through the product pages.
Reason: A poor looking website may be a business owner trying to save money by doing it on their own. If you can easily browse through the products and it meets your safety standards, then you may have found yourself a bargain online store. The owner's may be trying to keep costs low so that they can keep product prices low. Keep an open mind.
4. If you find on online store you like be sure to visit it often, at least monthly.
Reason: Online stores can often add and change product much quicker than your typical store. Checking in with them ensures that you get the best deals and the most variety of choices.
5. Be aware of stores that require you to sign in every time you visit.
Reason: This is understandable in circumstances such as wanting to create a wish list but you shouldn't have to sign in to 'window shop'. These people are often selling their email list and mailing list for extra income. If you do sign up for one these sites, be sure to look for the check boxes at the bottom that allow you chose what type, if any, information you want to receive from their affiliates.
6. Look for stores that offer a variety.
Reason: Buying online often means that you have to pay for shipping. If you find a store that only sells one item, then you will have to find another store for other items and you will have to pay shipping on each purchase.
